Safety

Never bolus concentrated KCl or KCl-supplemented fluids. Mix and label the bag carefully, use a controlled infusion pump, keep total IV potassium delivery at or below 0.5 mmol/kg/h, and reassess serum potassium according to response, renal function, urine output and the clinical context.

Persistent hypokalaemia should prompt consideration of ongoing losses, renal potassium handling and magnesium status.
